Which platforms does Veeam V2V migration support?

More and more companies selected virtualization solutions to deploy virtual environments. There are so many virtualization solutions and when changing virtualization solution or managing the heterogeneous virtual environment, you might need to learn how to perform V2V migration.

Veeam is the leading VM backup solution in the market and it can also help users migrate VM between different hypervisors. Well, let’s see the V2V migration process in Veeam.

Generally speaking, there are two kinds of VM migration in Veeam, Quick Migration and Instant Restore.

Quick Migration is its solution to help you quickly migrate VM from one ESXi host to another and it can also help you migrate another VM like Hyper-V VM to VMware ESXi host.

Instant Recovery can help you directly start VM on another hypervisor with its backup. For example, you can start a Hyper-V VM on an ESXi host with its backup. In fact, before you perform V2V migration with Quick Migration, you also need to select the Instant Recovery node.

In other words, if you would like to perform V2V migration with Veeam, you need to have a VM or instance backup (sometimes physical machine backup also works) created by Veeam’s product like Veeam Backup & Replication, Veeam Backup for RHV, Veeam Backup for Microsoft Azure, Veeam Agent, etc. You can check its helpcenter to see all the supported backup types.

For VM backup, Veeam supports VMware vSphere, Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, and RHV and this also means they are supported for V2V migration. Some VMs like XenServer VM are not supported so it will be inconvenient to perform VM migration with Veeam.

Of course, Veeam is not the only V2V migration solution. Vinchin can also help you move VM between different hypervisors.

Which Platform does Vinchin V2V migration support?

Vinchin can be a good alternative vendor to Veeam because it can also help you migrate VM with VM backup and Instant Recovery is supported by Vinchin, too.

Since Vinchin lets you move VM with VM backup, you can see which platforms it supports. Vinchin Backup & Recovery can help you backup and migrate VM of VMware vSphere, XenServer, XCP-ng, Red Hat Virtualization, oVirt, Oracle Linux KVM (Oracle Linux Virtualization Manager), OpenStack, Sangfor HCI, H3C CAS/UIS, HuaweiFusion Compute, Zstack, etc.

Generally speaking, you just need 3 steps to migrate VM to another host, adding hosts to the backup system, backing up the source VM, and restoring it on the destination host. A user-friendly web console will help you easily finish the process.

Usually, you just need to migrate VM by restoring it on the destination host but thanks to Vinchin Instant Recovery, you can also quickly start a VM on another platform with its backup when it’s needed.

1. Add the source and destination hosts to the backup system

Log in to Vinchin Backup & Recovery via a browser > expand Resources > expand Virtual Infrastructure > select Virtual Platform > click Add to add a host to the backup system

Add host

After that, check the host in the list > click License on the right > check the target host > click License (to let the backup system work according to your license)

You can also add the storage to store the VM backup later in Resources > Storage

Because Vinchin Backup & Recovery supports agentless VM backup, you just need to add the host to the backup system, install a plug-in on the host (not required on ESXi host), and then you can backup VM with a wizard.

2. Make a backup of the source VM

Expand VM Backup > select Backup > select the target VM > click Next > select the backup destination > click Next > select backup strategies like schedule, incremental backup, backup compression, etc. > click Next > review the job > click Submit

Backup VM

3. Restore the VM backup on a new host

Click VM backup > select Restore (if you would like to make it work immediately on the new host, select Instant Restore. Usually, it will take 15 minutes to boot the VM) > select the backup of the target VM > click Next > select the target host > click Next > select restore strategies. You can set it as a once-off job or a regular job > click Next > review the job > click Submit

Vinchin Backup & Recovery has been selected by thousands of companies and you can also start to use this powerful system with a 60-day full-featured free trial. Just click the button to get the installation package.
