Business Challenge

Fìdoka Srl is an Italian widely known telecommunication company composed of Servile Computer Srl, Rech Srl Picchio and Milliway Srl three companies. Business covers communication services from xdsl, wll (wireless local loop) to the managed hotspots, voip and video surveillance. Since 2015, Fìdoka Srl has established over 300 base stations in the Marche Region, with focus in more remote and less served regions by broadband coverage of 96% of the land authority. In addition, Fìdoka businesses are substantially growing and continuously covering the region of Umbria.

With the continuous expansion of service region, Fìdoka 's IT system data volume and application scale are also increasing rapidly. To automate business operations such as telecommunication services delivery, customer support and billing, Fìdoka virtualized the IT infrastructure on Citrix XenServer. However, protecting the production environment became more embarrassing and difficult as they were still using the legacy backup method which not only wastes of their time on making backup but also causes business interruption every 1~2 months. Finding a comprehensive backup and recovery solution to guarantee business stability and service continuity has become a key question to Fìdoka.

“We were looking for a solution that can not only backup our all business data, but also can recover any data at any time. We can’t afford for a long-time interruption of the business systems. With the legacy backup method, we can only back up a limited number of VMs daily.” Says Francesco, Technical Director of Fìdoka. “Backup jobs failed about once a month, we have to bear the risk of losing critical data.” Says Francesco.

Vinchin Solution

After about 2 months lab test, Fìdoka finally deployed Vinchin Backup & Recovery on a XenServer host running in their production environment to protect and monitor the entire XenServer cluster environment.

Deploying Vinchin on XenServer was super easy, it didn’t took much time for Fìdoka to install backup agent, although they need to install a small size backup plug-in on each XenServer host, they didn’t need to install agent on each VM, saved their deploying time by at least 5X. That’s why Fìdoka abandoned the legacy backup method and changed to back up all the XenServer VMs with a single Vinchin backup software.

What’s more, they can not only back up every VM by a few clicks, but also set up backup schedule as daily, weekly and monthly according to their real needs. “Instant VM Recovery was another great feature when we encountered a problem with VM or application crashes,” Francesco said. “Vinchin provides us a much faster restore than legacy backup solution, helping us return the necessary resources to production in less than 2 minutes.
