Business Challenge

Wirth Ltda. has been in the leather-footwear manufacturing market for over 70 years since 1946. Headquartered in Dois Irmãos, Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, the company also developed 4 branches where thousands of high-quality shoes are produced daily, serving customers in Brazil and around the world.

Wirth HQ virtualized their IT system on oVirt, the powerful open-source platform where the IT team is able to flexibly allocate the resources, manage the company’s ERP (enterprise resources planning) software, and develop new projects. The oVirt backup solution they previously used only supports most basic full backup, which takes relatively long time to process. “It worked well first since there ain’t much data on new oVirt machines, but as we gradually migrate more business units to it, the solution obviously couldn’t handle the heavy task at a satisfying speed.” Says Fábio.

Gearing up for the future trend of more flexible day-to-day IT operations, a new backup solution that keeps up with date and offers more time-saving backup strategies is what the IT team of Wirth wanted most. “We wanted to make the most of oVirt, which, an upper-level goal that should be taken based on advanced data protection.” Says Fábio.

Vinchin Solution

Fábio found Vinchin Backup & Recovery on Internet and decided to give it a go. After step-by-step installation, the next thing he needed to do is to visit the management console from any web browser. “It hits me right after I logged in,” says Fábio, “no obscure task categories, everything you can do with the software is clearly put on the side of the console.” To set up a basic VM backup job from the scratch, Fábio recalled that it just simply took him 10 minutes or so to finish. “Don’t forget that I was just new to this software at that time, so its simplicity is really amazing.”

In the past, Wirth had to suffer long-time processing of full backups of each virtual machine. But now, Vinchin Backup & Recovery swipe such cumbersomeness and unnecessity away for the IT team with more backup strategy options. “Incremental backup and differential backup become new available choices for us, so that backup on a daily basis is much easier and practical than in the past.” The IT team of Wirth now has set different backup schedules for their oVirt VMs with Vinchin Backup & Recovery to protect application data for different work purposes. Layered by the data reduction effects given by Compression and Deduplication, the size of each backup data block has also been greatly reduced, boosting the speed of backup as well as storage-saving results.

In addition to regular on-premises VM backup, Wirth also wanted to add anther insurance to prevent their mission-critical data from on-site damage. Offsite Backup Copy in Vinchin Backup & Recovery helps the IT team set up a remote disaster recovery center, so that they can have another data copy saved at another location. “We deploy the backup copy storage within one of the branch sites, in order to improve the recoverability of most important files.” Says Fábio, “Backup copy jobs have been stably processing since we started to use the feature, which is very reassuring."

Result

Vinchin Backup & Recovery widens backup strategies for Wirth’s oVirt VMs with more efficient incremental backup and differential backup rather than just full backup to save protection time, along with the ready-start Compression and Deduplication for greater results. They also successfully build a DR center for the main site at one of the branch offices with Backup Copy to ensure higher recoverability of business-critical files.
