Southwest Minzu University (SMU) was founded in 1950, it is a comprehensive university directly under the State Ethnic Affairs Commission. SMU has three campuses in Chengdu, China, and over 3000 full-time teachers, more than 30,000 full-time undergraduate students. The university has 24 colleges in 12 disciplines, undertaking more than 400 national scientific research projects and 1,400 provincial and ministerial scientific research projects. 

SMU owns a data center built with VMware virtualization. The deployment of the virtualization platform has obviously improved the efficiency of SMU’s server usage, reduced the budgets of server acquisition, and enhanced the continuity of their business and the availability of their storage devices. “Most of our core business is stably operated on the VMware platform, including the OA system, website system, E-mail, information portal, and other important application.” Says Mr. Wu, Director of the IT department.

The research and deployment of a smart campus brings a positive effect on the establishment of an information campus and also enhances the key competitive power of the university. With the continuous increase of various campus information service systems, a private cloud platform has become an essential basic resource component. However, more than 200 virtual machines have not been effectively protected, the entire data center of SMU was facing the threat of viruses, cyber-attack, misoperation, etc. It is extremely urgent for SMU to build a complete set of the data protection schemes for disaster recovery.
