Business Challenge

Unimed Natal was founded in October, 1977. It is the largest and most comprehensive health program cooperative in Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil.

Today, with more than 40 years of history, Unimed Natal has built its service network with 12 hospitals, 34 laboratories, 129 clinics and 1530 cooperate doctors, in addition to a complex structure of its own service: unimed hospital, emergency care of pediatric clinical centres, unit of physiotherapy and rehabilitation, SOS Image center and laboratories. Unimed Natal aims to build a health system sustainable, innovative and ethical, aligned with strategic planning, committing themselves to the service requirements and the continuous improvement of the quality management system.

 With the continuous expansion of business, the Unimed Natal’s construction of digital IT infrastructure is extremely urgent. The traditional single physical host can no longer effeciently compute and store its huge data volume.

Vinchin Solution

With the support of Marcelo, vinchin's sales representative in Brazil, Unimed Natal migrated its production system from the physical environment to the ovirt 4.2 virtualization platform, integrating its existing physical hosts as a hardware platform for its oVirt virtualized cluster, greatly improving the entire IT infrastructure computing and storage performance. Even terabytes of data volume, it is easy for management, operation and maintenance.

All of Unimed Natal's service resources are storing in the databases running on this oVirt platform, including its human resources, partnership resources, membership ID resources etc. Any loss or damage to these data would be devastating to Unimed Natal. So Marcelo deployed Vinchin Backup & Recovery in this oVirt environment, aim to protect all the crucial data, minimize the risk of data loss, and guarantee a quick recovery of the entire business system in case of any disaster occurs.

As an agentless mode backup software, Vinchin is very easy to install, only need to install a small size backup plugin on each host, no need to install any agent on each oVirt VM. Saves a lot of deployment time.

Speedkit is a Vinchin self-developed technology to make up the absence of CBT on oVirt, to speed up tracking changed data on oVirt VMs to make the incremental backup much faster.

Data deduplication & compression is the feature that most impressed Genilson, the IT manager of Unimed Natal. Because each VM has about 1TB - 2 TB size data, it will take time and space to back up these VMs if there’s no any efficient way. We use deduplication and compression to save at least 30% time and space when backing up the VMs. By combining the use of BitDetector, which can detect and exclude unnecessary data deep inside the VM operating system when doing backup, the backup size has been totally reduced at least 50%.
