The backup filter feature refers to specifying certain data for backup by excluding or including specific data when creating a backup task. Vinchin allows users to quickly define the source data for backup by using filters or directly selecting the virtual disks or physical machine disks and partitions, thereby saving subsequent backup time and storage consumption.

Include and Exclude Files

When backing up file servers and NAS, you can add multiple filter rules to the backup task to precisely define the backup data sources. By using wildcards like * and ?, such as *.docx, you can directly include or exclude files of a specific format, quickly filtering out invalid data.

Filter Disks and Partitions

When backing up a physical server, you can first choose a specific disk, and then further select which partitions on that disk to backup (the boot partition is mandatory). Similarly, when a virtual machine has multiple disks, you can also exclude disks that don’t need to be backed up, saving a significant amount of network bandwidth and backup storage space.

Customize Virtual Disk Recovery

When there are virtual machines with a particularly large amount of data in a production environment, and you have backed up multiple disks of the virtual machine, you can choose to restore only the operating system disk and the necessary data disks. This reduces data transfer, thereby saving recovery time and achieving higher recovery efficiency.
