Differential Backup

A differential backup is a type of data backup where only the files that have changed or been created since the last full backup are backed up. Vinchin differential backup is performed based on the last full backup, backing up the source data’s changes from the completion of the last full backup to the current time. In other words, each differential backup references the original full backup rather than the previous differential backup, so there is no dependency between differential backup points.

check Captures all changes made since the last full backup.
check After the initial full backup, each differential backup includes all the data that has changed since the last full backup, regardless of whether those changes were included in previous differential backups.
check Each differential backup grows larger over time as more changes accumulate since the last full backup.
check Initially fast, but as more data changes over time, differential backups take longer to complete.
check Captures only the changes made since the last backup of any kind (whether full or incremental).
check After the initial full backup, each incremental backup includes only the data that has changed since the last backup (either full or incremental).
check Typically smaller than differential backups, as each incremental backup contains only the changes made since the last backup.
check Faster backups as each incremental backup is smaller and quicker to create.

Key Benefits of Vinchin Differential Backup

Efficient Data Management

Differential backups only capture the changes made since the last full backup, which means they require less storage space compared to full backups and take less time to complete. With differential backups, there are fewer backup sets to manage, which can simplify the overall backup management process and reduce the risk of errors during backup and restore operations.

Flexible Backup Strategies

Vinchin allows for flexible scheduling of full and differential backups, enabling organizations to tailor their backup strategies to their specific needs. Differential backups can be seamlessly integrated into existing backup workflows, enhancing overall data protection strategies.

Simplified Restoration Process

To restore data from a differential backup, you only need the last full backup and the most recent differential backup. This simplifies the recovery process and reduces the time needed to restore data compared to incremental backups, which require multiple sets.
