Ubisoft Suffers Cyberattack After Nvidia & Samsung, How to Protect Data from Successive Incidents?

2022-03-21 | Vinchin Official

French video game giant Ubisoft said that a cyberattack briefly disrupted some systems and services, but didn't speak further about the details. The issue was revealed after graphics chip manufacturer Nvidia and South Korean electronic giant Samsung admitted to data breach this month.

Ubisoft said its It teams were working with external experts to investigate this issue and announced that all the affected games and serviced were quickly restored, no players personal information being compromised in the incident. This is the second cyber incident took place in Ubisoft, the company announced that 'Just Dance' users' data was compromised in December 2021.

“As a precautionary measure we initiated a company-wide password reset,” the statement said later on Friday.

While Ubisoft did not provide any information on the attackers, it appears that the same hacker group that previously claimed responsibility for cyber events at NVIDIA, Samsung, and Vodafone was involved.

A Telegram channel allegedly operated by the "Lapsus$" extortion organization provided a link to a news article about the Ubisoft hack, followed by the grinning face emoji, which may imply the group is responsible for the breach.

Nvidia suffered a cyberattack on March 1st that leaked employed credentials and proprietary information.

Samsung disclosed on March 7 that hacker stole Samsung source code data related to the operation of its Galaxy devices, but no personal information of its customers or employees was exposed.

Cyber security incidents are hard to root out, and companies from all walks of life fall to victim consistently. So, what can be done to avoid such attacks again?

Vinchin Data Protection Solutions

1.  Anti-Ransomware Storage Protection

Vinchin Backup and Recovery based on real-time IO monitoring protects backup data stored in Vinchin backup storages (exclusive block devices) by promptly denying backup data modification requests made by unauthorized applications. This effectively protects your critical backup data from being lost due to unanticipated situations. The visit will be denied if ransomware or other malware attempts to change the backup.

2.  Flexible Database Backup & Recovery

Not only does Vinchin Backup & Recovery offer a lot of versatility when it comes to database backup, but it also has a lot of flexibility when it comes to restore plan scheduling. Automatic full backup, differential backup, incremental backup, and transaction log backup can all be used to create highly recoverable database backups, which you can then restore to any destination you want, including the original database, a new database, or a specified folder, giving you more options for database recovery to meet your information security needs.

3.  3-2-1 Backup Strategy Combinations

Vinchin Backup & Recovery safeguards data from cyber threats in several ways. On a daily, weekly, or monthly basis, you can select several backup plan combinations for local backups, such as full backup, (forever) incremental backup, and differential backup. With Vinchin Backup Copy, you may also copy your backup data to a remote DR center or your branch office's backup data to HQ. If your primary production site is destroyed, you can restore the VM to an offsite production system using the offsite backup copy. You can restore the VM to the onsite production system by relocating the well-protected backup copy from the remote site to the local production environment.

As the digital era progresses, cyber security has been paid more attention because the rampant cyberattack or ransomware turns the question of 'if' it will happen into 'when'. What we can do is working on a data backup plan in advance to reduce data and property loss.
